Exploring Chumphon, the most underrated destination in Thailand
If you have ever read a guidebook or a blog post about Thailand, chances are you have heard about Ko Tao, Ko Phangan, and Ko Samui. The islands of the Samui archipelago are famous for their stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and world-class diving opportunities. These islands are conveniently accessed by ferry and reachable from the Chumphon Lomprayah Ferry Pier. Yet, Chumphon itself often goes unnoticed as tourists rush to more popular destinations. However, if you want to escape from the crowds, Chumphon is the place to be. Nestled between the lush jungles of southern Thailand and the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand, this underrated destination boasts pristine beaches and breathtaking natural wonders.
This article is divided into two parts: first, we’ll guide you on maximizing your time in Chumphon for a brief stopover, especially if you’re catching an early morning ferry the next day. Second, we’ll look into the various activities for an extended vacation in Chumphon. Whether you’re passing through or planning a more extended stay, Chumphon has much to offer.
What to do during an overnight stay in Chumphon
Most tourists only see the Lomprayah Ferry Pier in Chumphon on their way from Bangkok to the Samui archipelago. However, if you have to stay overnight, we can’t recommend the Moonshine Resort Chumphon enough.
It is close to the ferry pier, yet in the middle of nowhere. There is one beach restaurant and a noodle shack within walking distance. You can rent motorbikes or take one of the bicycles for free to discover the nearby national park. They offer a free shuttle to the ferry port. I loved how quiet, calm, and laid-back this place is. It is the perfect place to chill by the pool and walk on the empty beach. The staff is friendly, and the restaurant serves reasonably priced food. We stayed in one of the bungalows, which was basic but clean. The resort also has tents. They offer complimentary toiletries and free bottles of water. Overall, Moonshine Resort, Chumphon, is an excellent value for money.
The following attractions are within a short walk or a bike ride from the resort.
Soak up the sun on the beach
The beaches are as stunning as the more famous ones in Samui and the other islands, but there are so few tourists that you can have the whole beach for yourself. So escape the crowds and unwind on the tranquil shores of Chumphon. With soft golden sands, swaying palm trees, and calm turquoise waters, these idyllic beaches are perfect for sunbathing, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll along the shoreline.
Visit the mangrove forest in the Mu Ko Chumphon National Park
A short bike ride from the resort (or 5 km from the ferry pier) lies a natural wonderland. The Mu Ko Chumphon National Park is where the convergence of land and sea creates a mesmerizing landscape. The mangrove forest, with its labyrinthine waterways and dense foliage, is a buffer against coastal erosion. As part of the conservation efforts, the national park offers a small museum that teaches about the wildlife in the mangrove forest. Beyond the mangroves, a suspension bridge stretches across the azure waters. Its elegant design connects the mainland to nearby islands, offering panoramic views of the surrounding seascape.
At the time of writing (2024), the entrance fee for farangs was 200 bahts for adults, and children over 110 cms pay half of that. After trekking in the jungle, you will get ravenous. Luckily, there is a small restaurant and a convenience store at the entrance of the national park.
What to do in Chumphon if you have more time?
If you spend half a day in Chumphon before a ferry ride, chilling on the beach or visiting Mu Ko National Park is the most you can do without getting in a frenzy of overplanning. However, if Chumphon is your destination and not just a pit stop, read on for more things to do in Chumphon because we are about to get off the beaten path.

How to get to Chumphon, Thailand
Multiple transportation options are available to reach Chumphon. If traveling by train, one can catch a train from Bangkok’s new Krung Thep Aphiwat Railway Station. You can book tickets online for the relatively more comfortable express or rapid trains. Besides, regular trains with fans and wooden benches also operate between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. A ticket between Bangkok and Chumphon would set you back approximately 2 USD, but at the time of writing – 2024 – I could only purchase tickets for these trains at the train station one hour before departure. The journey takes approximately 6-7 hours and offers scenic views of the Thai countryside.
Travelers can also fly directly to Chumphon Airport from Bangkok or other major cities, with flight durations typically around 1 hour.
Alternatively, travelers can opt for a shuttle bus service from various locations, including Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal.
Another option is to take a ferry from nearby islands such as Koh Tao or Koh Samui, which provides a picturesque sea journey.
